Today I want to talk you about something that many gamers, mostly those who create content on social media like YouTube, Twitch or TikTok, will be interested in. Would you like to be a respected gamer? Here are some tips, based on my experience.

Decide the kind of player you are

In the huge gamer community there are lots of sub-communities, depending on the game or the genre, and even the gameplay style and the goals of the players. You must decide which kind of player you are.

Do you like challenges? Fighting against hard enemies and bosses, losing and losing again and again, but beating them after a lot of tries? You should try the souls-like genre videogames, like the whole Dark Souls series or Sekiro, which won the Game of the Year award in 2019. Also games like Nioh or Hollow Knight, with some similarities to those souls-like games.

Do you enjoy platformer games? This kind of games can be too easy or too hard. But all of them can be enjoyable. The Super Mario series has a plenty of platformers. It was a platformer in is origins, despite having games like Mario Party or Mario Kart. If you prefer challenging platformers, maybe you are looking for games like Cuphead, Hollow Knight again, or Super Meat Boy.

Once you have decided the kind of videogames you actually enjoy the most, try to focus on those games and become an expert, try to be better, and if you are already good on those games, become even better.

In my case, I am a great fan of souls-like and roleplay videogames. I have played many games made by FromSoftware and some of my favorite games are RPGs like Skyrim and Elden Ring (which is also a souls-like). I always squeeze the content of those games, explore every single place in the world I am given, and I spend hundreds of hours on them.

What are your goals?

Do you know the achievements from Steam and Xbox and the trophies from PlayStation? Trying to get achievements is a great way to play a whole videogame and see everything it has to show. And PlayStation gives you a platinum trophie each time you win all the trophies of a game. That award looks beautiful in your profile. I have 17 platinum trophies and every time I really like a videogame I go for its platinum trophie.

In addition to collecting platinum trophies, maybe you want to appear in public lists of a videogame. The best way of achieving that is try to do speedruns. A speedrun is a challenge that consists in beating a game in the less time as possible. There are some variations. Maybe a speedrun allowing you to use glitches or take advantage of bugs to skip parts of the game, maybe a speedrun where you can't use some functions of the game... In YouTube you will find thousands of speedruns of many different games. Some videogames have also trophies and achievements related with beating the game in less than a certain time. If you do speedruns you can post your times in some pages dedicated to this part of the hobby. With effort and a lot of time you could be one of the fastest players in the world!

Another goal you might have is just helping people. Maybe you want to give some tips and clues to players who might have problems in completing a very difficult part of a game that you were able to pass. Then record that part, comment over it and and post it on YouTube. Many players use tutorials to beat a difficult boss or to complete a confusing section. They will thank your help.

Don't criticize other communities and genres

Surely you don't like a concrete genre, as shooter games, or sport games. Many people just play a single videogame and don't know other videogames, even when they are so popular. But not every one are big fans of videogames. Some persons might play just to hang out. Maybe everyone was talking about a videogame and someone wanted to give an opportunity to videogames in general.

Don't criticize people for not playing "real" videogames with good stories. Be kind, help those people to improve their skills if you are good in that game, and try to suggest them some videogames with an affordable difficulty and accesible for them. I have met some people who just played Fortnite, as it was the trending game. Luckily I also like that game and I joined to that persons, but I've never even thought in tell them that they are not "real gamers" just because they play Fortnite.

Consider giving the latest news

TikTok is the best option for this. It might be difficult to grow up in social media, but maybe with time your views will increase. If you focus your content on talking about the latest news in the gaming community, talking about new releases, about the situation and the plans of some companies, or just giving your opinion, always in a respectful manner, people will be most likely to enjoy watching your videos. I follow some different TikTok profiles whose content is based on this, and some of them adds humor to their videos, and it is not also informative but funny and entertaining too.

So that are all the tips I can give you to win the respect of the gamer community. I hope this is useful for you!
